It’s quite rare for a new diner to open up their space in the not so happening location, but the newly opened Hay decided to take that plunge and opened up in Begumpet which is considered to be shopper’s paradise. This quaint new joint has come up in the same premises as that of Oh! Calcutta and Sigree sporting a cozy and quirky vibe. The place is definitely a welcoming change for the people who find it difficult to go to far off place to experience this kind of atmosphere. Hay definitely scores on the décor and impressed me quite a lot.
On the food front their menu is quite appealing with fusion dishes being served and it is a set menu. All the starters served tasted really well with Andhra Chili Chicken taking a lead given to its spice kick and extremely soft chicken chunks. The second best for me was the Nilgiri Fish Tikka. Truffle Mushroom Galouti was quite good with that sharpness of mushroom being evident. Butter Chicken Kulcha Bombs were quite heavy and cheesy on the palate.
The mains menu was limited and had some good options to it. I tried the Kondapur Chicken Curry, which was really good in taste but all the while I kept on wondering about the name as it was too smooth to be named after the region. My recommendation here would be to use country chicken rather than the farm chicken. Sambhar Khichdi was quite loaded with desi ghee and could have been better provided the sambhar masala was over fried as this spoilt the taste completely.
Desserts play an important role after any meal and Hay could have done better here. The desserts I tried were quite good but somehow did not excite me that much. I had Chocolate Envelope which had a paste of crushed almonds enveloped in rich dark chocolate served over a strawberry sauce. This could have been a good one but the strawberry sauce was not something which went well with the combination. The other dessert I tried was Jalebi Fries which again disappointed in flavors. They need to make some changes to it as the concept is good.
To sum it all Hay did impress me overall as I went with minimal expectations. Every new place has its own initial hiccups and with minor tweaks here and there can be sorted. I went there on a Tuesday evening and the place was quite packed. If they keep up the same tempo they definitely will make a mark in this locality.
